We spend our entire lives with ourselves, yet we rarely take the time to truly study who we are. It's easy to get stuck in routine patterns, repeating old habits & assuming we already know our own limits. It's not necessarily about reinventing who we are but about uncovering the layers that are already there.
Discovering ourselves is an ongoing journey of executing & looking inward. It involves trying new activities to see how we react, & processing those experiences through reflection. By stepping out of our routines & observing ourselves, we can uncover hidden passions, boundaries, & values.
Here's a structured approach to help effectively learn how to shake up our routines, ask better questions, & meet the inner self we have been missing:
Take Action & Try New Things
We learn the most about our preferences by exposing ourselves to novel situations & observing our baseline reactions.
Try Random Hobbies: Take a low commitment class, learn a new language, pick up a sport, or try a craft.
Treat Reactions as Data: After a new experience, we should ask ourselves: What drained me? What felt natural? What sparked my curiosity?
Travel or Explore Locally: Visit nearby state parks, go to a museum in your area, or take a solo day trip.
Reflect & Process
Action without reflection leaves data unprocessed. Taking time alone allows us to connect the dots.
Journaling: Write down our thoughts, daily frustrations, & moments of joy.
Begin Exploring Prompts: What would I do today if I wasn't afraid of failing? or When do I feel most like my authentic self?
Meditation & Mindfulness: Sit quietly away from external noise & recognize our inner voice.
Audit Our Time & Energy: Track how we spend our time for a week. Notice which tasks energize us & which leave us depleted.
Seek External Perspectives
Sometimes, the people who are closest to us can observe strengths & patterns that we might completely overlook.
Ask Trusted Confidants: Ask close friends or mentors to describe the three strongest traits or times they observed you at your most passionate.
Assessments: While not absolute, free tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Personality Perfect, or VIA Institute on Character can provide excellent springboards for introspection & conversations.
Face Our Conditioning
Often, we confuse our true selves with behaviors we learned just to fit in or survive past environments.
Identify Core Values: Determine what matters most to us in life. We can use scientifically grounded tools like personal values assessments to organize our priorities.
Shed the 'Shoulds': Reflect on goals or hobbies we pursue merely because of societal expectations compared to those we genuinely enjoy.
Building Upon Our Breakthroughs
To truly understand ourselves, we must be willing to step into the unknown. Treat our personal growth as an ongoing experiment rather than a final destination. Embrace the awkward phases, celebrate our evolving interests, & keep asking questions.
The journey to self-discovery is the most rewarding adventure we will ever undertake. Here are some tips to keep the momentum going:
Document Our Progress: Keep a dedicated journal to track new habits & shifts in our perspectives over time.
Embrace Continuous Learning: Challenge ourselves by taking a new course or reading outside of our usual genres. We can explore a wide variety of topics on platforms like Coursera or MasterClass.
Reflect & Recalibrate: Set aside 10 minutes at the end of each week to review what we have learned about ourselves & what we want to explore next.
